Ghent
Ghent has a unique combination of factors: the biggest university attracting a mass of young talent, the rich cultural scene, with De Vooruit as innovative example and the harbor and many tourists in our city force us to have a broad view on the world causing a creative angle and entrepreneurship.
A lot of web agencies, web strategists and creatives live and/or work in Ghent. There is a certain atmosphere and vibe in Ghent motivating (young) people to organize events such as Barcamps or launch a web start-up of which several have become successful companies. We want to maintain this atmosphere and especially encourage it to go a step further, for more cutting-edge thinking and debate on the future of the Internet. Ghent Web Valley is supporting these companies and events.
The Venue
Just as last time, the Zebrastraat will be the venue. We reserved a room for 200 people, the bar/lounge area and some smaller rooms.
The Zebrastraat is the perfect venue for Arrrrcamp, providing a cosy atmosphere with the possibility to give professional talks. It is located near the centre of Ghent, with good connections to the train station and the city centre. In a previous life it used to be part of the Zoo, but now it is a meeting point for conferences and art expositions.
The Party
The conference will be great, no doubt 'bout that. To make it more awesome, we've decided to add a moment of babblin' and drinkin'. So we are inviting all of you conference-people to have a party!
Not just any party, but a great party. With the help of the city of Ghent, I got some budget to add a very fine end-event to the conference: free drinks, a nice place, in the city center, and it is on a unique location... this party will be on a ship! I've "chartered" the partyplace called "Le Bateau" in Ghent, so you landrats can show how well waves and drinks go together.
After the conference, there will be time to grab a bite in the city, and then you're all welcome aboard me ship, and join in on real sailor activity!
Staying in Ghent / Accommodation
As Ghent has a lot to offer to visitors, or the timing of the conference might limit your possibilities to get back home on the same day, you might want to stay a night (or more) in Ghent.
If you prefer a hotel, we recommend Hotel Gravensteen. This hotel is located in the center of the city, has a good price/quality and a superb location and this is where we lodge our speakers so they can enjoy a good night sleep before/after the conference. It has a very good connection to the central train-station and to the venue with the tram (both 10 minutes travel time).
If your budget is more limited, or you want to stay with locals, check out the many B&B places we have in Ghent. They even have a website!
If you have trouble arranging accommodation, or you want some help from locals, don't hesitate to contact the Captain!
